Dear clients,
Starting September 1st, 2025, the use of the new version 4.4 of electronic documents will be mandatory in Costa Rica.
Here’s what you need to know in simple terms:
It’s not just invoices. All electronic documents (invoices, tickets, credit notes, export documents) must be updated.
The only valid file for Tax Authority is the XML file (not the PDF). Always save the XML with Hacienda’s confirmation.
New information fields: Identify if your client is foreign, report sales of non-nationalized products, and register taxes more accurately.
New document: The Electronic Payment Receipt is introduced, used for sales to the government and special credit sales.
New rules for product bundles, sales of used goods, and sales of software licenses or digital services from abroad.
What should you do?If you already use electronic invoicing, you must update your system before September 1st, 2025.
